Jack Draper, the gritty British 15th seed, has earned his place in the Australian Open last 16 after three consecutive five-set battles. His next challenge is a highly anticipated showdown against four-time Grand Slam champion Carlos Alcaraz, promising a clash of resilience and skill.

Despite spending nearly 13 hours on court across his first three matches, Draper remains undeterred. His journey has been nothing short of remarkable, especially considering he withdrew from the United Cup with a hip injury just weeks before the tournament.

Draper’s campaign in Melbourne has showcased his mental and physical endurance. His most recent victory, a 3-hour-58-minute epic against Australia’s Aleksandar Vukic, ended in the early hours of Saturday morning. This grueling performance followed similarly demanding wins over Mariano Navone and Thanasi Kokkinakis.

“I’m done after two sets most of the time,” Draper admitted, reflecting on the stamina he has built. “That’s something I’ve needed to improve, and I’m proud of the progress I’ve made.”

By becoming only the seventh man in history to win his first three rounds at the Australian Open in five sets, Draper has proven his determination and ability to fight through adversity.

Draper’s upcoming clash with Carlos Alcaraz brings an intriguing storyline. The Briton defeated Alcaraz in their last encounter on grass at the Queen’s Club in London last year. However, the Spaniard triumphed in their two prior meetings, setting the stage for a high-stakes rematch.

“I need to be aggressive. I need to take my chances,” Draper said about his strategy. “Against the top players, you get fewer chances to win games and sets. I need to be brave in the way I play.”

Aware that Alcaraz will target his recent marathon efforts, Draper remains confident. “I’m expecting him to come out knowing I’ve played three five-setters, but he’s got a battle on his hands. He’ll need to play well.”

Draper attributes his ability to endure long matches to the intense preparation he has undertaken. His maiden ATP Tour title in Stuttgart last year was a stepping stone, but the Australian Open has further demonstrated his growth as a competitor.

“This is a huge step forward for me,” Draper said. “The fact that I’ve come through three five-set matches mentally and physically—it doesn’t happen often. It’s a testament to the work I’ve done and the place I’m in.”

A clash of styles

Draper’s aggressive playing style contrasts with Alcaraz’s all-around athleticism and versatility. While Alcaraz enters the match as the favorite, Draper’s recent performances highlight his capability to push elite players to their limits.

The Briton’s strategy will focus on maintaining an attacking mindset and seizing opportunities. “I need to keep my composure and stay brave,” Draper reiterated. “If I do that, I can give myself a good chance.”

For Draper, a victory over Alcaraz would mark a career-defining moment, solidifying his place as one of the rising stars in men’s tennis. For Alcaraz, it’s an opportunity to advance deeper into the tournament and reassert his dominance on the Grand Slam stage.

As the two prepare to face off, fans can expect a thrilling contest. Draper’s marathon journey and Alcaraz’s championship pedigree make this a must-watch encounter in Melbourne.
