The Oakland Athletics have signed veteran infielder Luis Urias to a one-year deal, adding experience and versatility to their roster. The move was announced on Monday, with the Athletics also placing right-hander Luis Medina on the 60-day injured list to make room on the 40-man roster. Medina is recovering from Tommy John surgery, which will sideline him for an extended period.

Urias brings experience to the Athletics' infield

Urias, 27, spent the 2024 season with the Seattle Mariners, primarily playing third base. He struggled at the plate, batting .191 with seven doubles, four home runs, and 16 RBIs in 94 at-bats over 41 games. Despite a down year offensively, Urias offers defensive flexibility, having played at third base, second base, and shortstop throughout his career.

The Mexico native has appeared in 486 major league games, posting a career batting average of .232 with 52 home runs and 196 RBIs. His journey through the MLB includes stints with the San Diego Padres (2018-19), Milwaukee Brewers (2020-23), Boston Red Sox (2023), and Mariners (2024).

Urias’ best seasons came with Milwaukee

Urias had his best offensive seasons while playing for the Milwaukee Brewers. In 2021, he belted a career-high 23 home runs, followed by 16 homers in 2022. His production dipped in 2023 and 2024, but Oakland hopes he can regain his form and provide depth to their infield rotation.

Athletics make room for Urias with Medina move

To accommodate Urias on the 40-man roster, the Athletics moved Luis Medina to the 60-day injured list. Medina, a 24-year-old right-hander, underwent Tommy John surgery, which typically requires at least 12-16 months of recovery. Medina showed promise in 2023, making 17 starts for Oakland with a 3-10 record and a 5.42 ERA. His absence leaves the Athletics’ pitching staff with a notable gap, but Urias' signing strengthens the infield depth.

Urias’ potential role with Oakland

With his ability to play multiple infield positions, Urias could serve as a utility player for the Athletics. He may split time between third base, second base, or shortstop, depending on the team’s needs throughout the season. Oakland’s infield depth chart remains fluid, and Urias' veteran experience could be valuable, especially for a young and rebuilding Athletics squad.

Athletics continue offseason moves

The signing of Luis Urias reflects Oakland’s ongoing efforts to bolster their roster. The Athletics, who finished with one of the worst records in Major League Baseball in 2024, are seeking low-cost veteran additions as they rebuild their team. Urias, known for his solid defense and occasional power, could find regular playing time if he performs well in spring training.

As the 2025 season approaches, the Athletics are likely to make additional roster adjustments, particularly in pitching and infield depth. Urias’ performance with Seattle and Milwaukee shows he has the potential to contribute, and the Athletics will hope he can reignite his offensive production in Oakland.
