French President Emmanuel Macron urged Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to halt attacks on Gaza, stressing the importance of a ceasefire and humanitarian aid delivery. Macron’s appeal came during a phone conversation with Netanyahu on Sunday, March 30, as tensions in the region escalated.

Macron shared details of their discussion on the X platform, emphasizing that Israel must stop its military operations in Gaza to allow humanitarian efforts to proceed. "We will continue working on the Arab reconstruction plan and strive to revive the political process toward a two-state solution," he stated. "This remains essential as the only viable path to lasting peace and security for both peoples."

The French leader underscored that forced displacement and annexation of Palestinian territories were unacceptable and ran counter to efforts for a peaceful resolution.

Macron’s stance on hostages and regional stability

While urging Israel to halt its offensive, Macron reiterated France’s commitment to securing the release of all hostages held by Hamas. He also stressed the need to guarantee Israel’s security, highlighting the delicate balance in the conflict.

Beyond Gaza, Macron addressed the situation in Lebanon, urging Israel to adhere to the ceasefire agreement. "This demand applies to all parties involved," he noted, calling for strengthened monitoring mechanisms to ensure compliance.

Additionally, the French president emphasized the need for Lebanon to regain full sovereignty, which includes a "complete Israeli withdrawal from Lebanese territory." This statement aligns with France’s long-standing position advocating for Lebanon’s territorial integrity.

Growing international pressure on Israel

Macron’s appeal adds to mounting international pressure on Israel to de-escalate the conflict. Several world leaders have urged restraint amid concerns over worsening humanitarian conditions in Gaza. The French president's remarks reflect broader European concerns about the ongoing crisis and its potential regional implications.

France has consistently supported diplomatic efforts to broker a ceasefire and facilitate humanitarian aid. In recent weeks, French officials have engaged in discussions with Arab and Western allies to push for de-escalation and a long-term solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Two-state solution remains a priority

Macron’s call to revive the two-state solution aligns with France’s foreign policy approach, which views the framework as the only sustainable resolution to the conflict. French officials have emphasized that unilateral actions, including Israeli settlement expansion and military operations, undermine peace efforts.

In recent years, France has played an active role in diplomatic negotiations, advocating for direct talks between Israeli and Palestinian leaders. However, the ongoing violence and political deadlock have stalled progress.

Ceasefire talks and future prospects

The French president’s discussion with Netanyahu comes at a critical moment, as ceasefire negotiations continue with mediation efforts led by Egypt, Qatar, and the United States. While Israel has faced growing international calls to halt its military campaign, its leadership remains firm on security concerns and eliminating Hamas threats.

Despite diplomatic efforts, achieving a lasting ceasefire remains uncertain. Macron’s latest intervention underscores France’s push for de-escalation, but whether his appeal influences Israeli policy remains to be seen.

As the conflict persists, global attention remains focused on developments in Gaza, with humanitarian organizations warning of dire consequences if fighting continues.
