Augusto Fernandez will once again take Miguel Oliveira's place in the upcoming Qatar Grand Prix, scheduled for April 11 to 13. The Spanish rider, representing Prima Pramac, is stepping in as Oliveira continues to recover from a left shoulder injury sustained during the second round of the MotoGP season at Termas de Río Hondo in Argentina. Fernandez already filled in at the American Grand Prix in Austin, Texas, and will now continue that responsibility in Qatar.
This marks the second consecutive race in which Augusto Fernandez will ride in place of Oliveira, and his presence in the MotoGP paddock is becoming increasingly important. The decision comes after a solid showing in Austin, where Fernandez managed to finish 13th and earned three valuable points in challenging, wet conditions. For Prima Pramac and KTM, Fernandez’s performance brought a glimmer of promise amid a difficult start to the 2025 season.
A challenging road to recovery for Oliveira
Miguel Oliveira, a veteran MotoGP rider and a key figure in the Prima Pramac Yamaha team, has been out of action since his high-speed crash during the Argentina Grand Prix. The incident left him with a shoulder injury that has proven more serious than initially expected. Despite early optimism, his rehabilitation process has taken longer, forcing the team to find a capable substitute to maintain their momentum in the championship.
“Miguel Oliveira (Prima Pramac Yamaha MotoGP) continues his rehabilitation after his crash at Round 2 at Termas de Río Hondo in Argentina. He will once again be replaced by Augusto Fernandez,” MotoGP confirmed in an official statement on Saturday.
At just 27 years old, Augusto Fernandez brings youth, skill, and growing experience to the Prima Pramac lineup. His ability to adapt quickly to the demands of top-level racing has been crucial in stepping up as a substitute rider. His performance in Texas proved that he’s more than capable of competing among the best, especially in unpredictable race conditions.
Fernandez’s journey back to MotoGP spotlight
For Fernandez, this opportunity represents more than just a temporary ride. After scoring points in Austin’s chaotic weather, he’s hoping to build on that momentum in Qatar. Although 13th place might not make headlines, considering the competition and the wet conditions, it was a commendable performance for someone jumping into a race seat at the last minute.
“The 27-year-old returned to MotoGP action at the Grand Prix of the Americas and scored three points in a wet and wild Grand Prix on Sunday afternoon,” MotoGP highlighted.
Fernandez’s resilience and tactical approach impressed many in the paddock, earning him praise not only from fans but also from team officials who saw in him a reliable and fast rider capable of handling pressure. With KTM still struggling to find consistency across the early stages of the season, having a rider like Fernandez ready to fill in with little notice is a crucial asset.
KTM’s struggle and the need for consistency
KTM and Prima Pramac have had a bumpy start to the 2025 MotoGP season. With the team unable to find a solid footing in the first four races, the absence of Miguel Oliveira has been felt more deeply. Oliveira is known for his aggressive style and race intelligence, both of which are qualities that have been difficult to replace fully.
Though Fernandez may not yet have Oliveira’s level of experience, his ability to read races and execute team strategies makes him a valuable stand-in. While KTM hopes for Oliveira’s speedy recovery, Fernandez’s involvement ensures that the team doesn’t fall too far behind in the standings.
No timeline yet for Oliveira’s return
While fans are hopeful to see Oliveira back on the bike soon, his return to racing remains uncertain. The 30-year-old continues to undergo medical treatment for his shoulder, and team doctors are cautious about rushing his return. Oliveira’s health and long-term performance remain the top priority, even if it means sitting out another race or two.
“The 30-year-old racer is currently undergoing medical treatment and is expected to be able to return to strengthen Prima Pramac at the next grand prix,” said a team spokesperson. However, there’s still no official confirmation on when that return might be.
For now, Fernandez is set to carry the baton for Prima Pramac, heading into the Qatar Grand Prix with the confidence of recent experience and the backing of a team in need of stability. His involvement not only maintains competitiveness but also brings hope that the team can remain in contention until Oliveira makes his full return.
Looking ahead to the Qatar Grand Prix
As the MotoGP caravan heads to the Lusail International Circuit in Qatar, all eyes will be on Fernandez to see if he can improve on his Austin performance. The Qatar track, known for its smooth surface and fast corners, presents a very different challenge compared to the unpredictable weather conditions in Texas. But if Fernandez can quickly adjust to the demands of the circuit, there's every reason to believe he can finish in the points once again.
Prima Pramac will no doubt be working closely with Fernandez throughout the race weekend, ensuring he’s fully prepared and supported. With the championship still wide open in its early stages, every point counts, and Fernandez's role could be vital in keeping the team’s season on track.
Augusto Fernandez stepping in for Miguel Oliveira at the Qatar GP underscores how unpredictable and demanding the world of MotoGP can be. With Oliveira still recovering, Fernandez has a golden opportunity to prove his value not just as a temporary substitute but as a capable racer ready for the big stage.
The Qatar Grand Prix could serve as a turning point for both Fernandez and Prima Pramac. With solid preparation, team support, and a growing sense of confidence, Fernandez has a chance to shine under the desert lights and continue making the most of this unexpected yet exciting chapter in his career.
